PALO ALTO — The Multi-Generational Garden

THE CHALLENGE

The homeowner, a busy tech professional and new mother in Palo Alto, lives with her parents who help care for the baby. While the family loves gardening, the existing property was trapped in a traditional layout: dying, water-thirsty lawns dominating both front and backyards, with overgrown plants scattered randomly along the perimeter. The family deeply cherished an old, mature apricot tree in the center of the backyard and several mature fruit trees, roses, hydrangeas, and gardenias. They needed a functional, multi-generational master plan that preserved these precious existing trees while adding walk-in garden paths, a comfortable outdoor patio for daily relaxation, and dedicated edible garden beds.

THE FRONT YARD DESIGN

VividLand transformed the outdated front lawn into an inviting, walk-in botanical entry garden. We framed the boundary with a breathable horizontal slatted wood fence, gently screening views from the street to create a private, serene threshold. After removing the dry lawn, we preserved the mature maple tree and paired it with a rich palette of low-water evergreens, drought-tolerant perennials, and ornamental grasses. Clean porcelain stepping pads guide the journey to the front door, turning a neglected front space into an organized, welcoming retreat.

THE BACKYARD & CIRCULATION

In the backyard, we removed the massive turf area and anchored the entire layout around the majestic apricot tree. To break away from rigid, boxy boundaries, we introduced a 45-degree angled pathway system that dynamically sculpts new garden zones and walking paths. We integrated the existing fruit trees, Osmanthus, and roses into cohesive planting beds featuring multi-layered, year-round blooms.

Right outside the back door, we created a modern lounge patio combining wood-look and sleek pavers. We surrounded this seating area with pollinator-friendly perennials, actively attracting hummingbirds and butterflies right next to where the family sits. Along the sunniest back perimeter, we installed three custom raised vegetable beds, which are now thriving with fresh home-grown produce. Warm, low-voltage landscape lighting gently outlines the paths and foliage at dusk, while natural gravel walkways tie the entire outdoor space together.

THE RESULT

The garden now functions as a seamless, continuous walking loop connecting the front and backyards. The new mother and her parents stroll through the garden throughout the day, the grandparents enjoy peaceful resting corners and rewarding harvests in the edible garden, and the baby grows up engaging with lively hummingbirds, butterflies, and textured plants. It is a living, functional sanctuary that supports every generation of the family.
